FEM saves time and money.

At Gärtner and Lang, important product qualities are predicted by means of FEM (Finite Element Method) computer simulation at the advance development and design stage. This enables us to gain reliable information on rigidity, vibration characteristics and crash behaviour.

Pendulum impact test on loud speaker grille
in acc. with specification
A210 720 00 00
Pendulum length: 600 mm
Pendulum weight: 2,3 kg
Testing velocity: 3,5 m/s
Test object: shoe tip made of rubber (Shore A 75) radius 10 mm, height 15mm
Point of impact: in the centre and on the edge of the grille
Test temperatures: +60°C, room tem., -10°C

This pre-calculation guarantees reliability for planning and that the development work will advance quickly and economically. Any potential errors can be ruled out effectively in advance..

During the development of our simulation processes, we are in constant contact with our customers so that we can compare the test and measuring results they have already achieved.

Catia Version 5 now in use.

New perspectives
Catia, the leading PLM solution for product development has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for manufacturing companies through its latest version, CATIA 5 (V5). CATIA V5 represents a ground-breaking improvement, combining the best of CATIA V4 with the most up-to-date technology. CATIA V5 is the first CAD/CAM/CAE system to include internet and technology standards. We meanwhile use CATIA V5 parallel to our existing installations to gain additional benefit from its extended functions.

The practical experience we have gained with V5 has convinced us of the benefits the new CATIA version has to offer and has strengthened our resolve to phase in V5 for all product development processes.

Ticona

Kundenporträt - Gärtner & Lang GmbH & Co. KG, Germany
January 2003

Klaus-Dieter Gärtner, managing partner and technical manager, is in a particularly good mood for two reasons: because we are visiting him and even more because a large automotive concern has just placed an order with him. Gärtner & Lang in Sontra, Upper Hesse, is to produce loudspeaker meshes for a new model. "A  specialty of our company which has been making us a good name for many years with DaimlerChrysler and Volvo, to name but a few?, says Gärtner with confidence. Ticona Account Manager Jürgen Fess is also pleased since the 500 tons of POM per year up to now will be increased further.

Hostaform is the ideal processing partner

Jürgen Fess, Klaus-Dieter Gärtner
Hostaform from Ticona is the ideal processing partner for Gärtner: "Good and fast flowing, dimensionally stable, non-hygroscopic (water-absorbing) and with a narrow processing window", as he summarizes the properties. 7,000 to 8,000 speaker meshes leave the four injection molding machines every day, one every 40 seconds.
Two meshes per injection process, in three shifts, around the clock. The flow rate of Hostaform is particularly decisive for the large areas with filigree holing and the correspondingly high tool inner pressures in order to achieve the number of pieces required to the precision demanded. Klaus-Dieter Gärtner has to set up three more machines for the new model, these machines are fitted with 16 different tools at a price of around Euro 500,000 each. An enormous investment package for the medium-sized company which has specialized in technically sophisticated thermoplastic products since 1955.

Great expertise expanded since 1955

This new order represents further confirmation of the reputation Gärtner's company has. He manages the company together with his brother Ralf Gärtner and Hans-Peter Lang. "We  have also invested a great deal in state-of-the-art technologies: CAD, CAM, CNC, erosion and milling processing stations", he regards this as confirmation of his strategy of expanding design and tool-making to fields of greater expertise, in addition to the qualified production.

And further expansion of expertise is coming: cooperation with three other injection molders is to be started this year, "INTAGA" in Nossen, Saxony. INTAGA stands for "Interior Working Group  Automotive" and is to promote, as a development and production center, the use of fine plastics in automobile interiors.

By the way, Klaus-Dieter Gärtner takes speaker meshes for a drive on business and in private. However, these do not often have anything to do apart from look good, because the passionate Porsche driver prefers listening to the sound of the six cylinders in the rear.
